THE Women's Circus is reaching out to a younger generation of big-top performers, but it's still forced to cram into a small space in West Footscray.
Victoria's only women's circus was promised a permanent home in 2006, but completion of the $2.75million Footscray Community Arts Centre redevelopment is still some way off.
Circus outreach co-ordinator Annemarie Ferguson said the circus was in discussion with Maribyrnong Council over finding a new home.
"At this point we're still here for the interim. That could be six months or three years; let's hope it's not three years. We've got so many people, so many classes, and there's not enough room here."
Council's community wellbeing manager, Jenny McMahon, said a feasibility study had been completed with Arts Victoria to examine the possibility of developing a home for the Women's Circus.
"Both the council and Arts Victoria are waiting for advice from the Women's Circus about the study before proceeding with any action."
In the meantime, the circus continues to grow. A new girls' circus group has been set up in partnership with the council for local young women.
Girls' circus members will meet on Wednesdays, starting today.
Ms Ferguson said women and girls from non-English-speaking backgrounds were encouraged to join the group.
The girls-only classes are designed to teach participants the importance of communication and teamwork, and increases confidence levels.
Girls Circus Group classes will be held weekly, from 4-6pm, at the Braybrook Community Centre and Drill Hall, 395 Barkly Street, West Footscray. Transport to classes can be organised through the council.
