THE Seabrook Community Centre has had a backyard blitz.
Where there was once dying grass, there is now artificial turf, water tanks and native plants and shrubs.
Activities co-ordinator Margaret Claringbold said Point Cook and Seabrook residents were enjoying a new green focus at the centre.
"The garden was the final stage of a two-year retrofit of the building. The renovations were aimed at making the community hub more sustainable. At the same time, we introduced environmental workshops, which have been very well received by local community groups.
"This year, we're conducting some hands-on programs about food production, food preservation, gardening and keeping chooks."
Some of the additions to the centre include timber seating, shade sails, a worm farm and solar panels. Funded by Hobsons Bay Council, the renovations were a recommendation of a 2007 strategic review of council buildings.
