Footscray excited at new leader

10 Mar, 2010 12:00 AM
FOOTSCRAY has issued a signal of intent with the recruiting coup of International Hockey Federation accredited coach David Audesho.

Bulldogs president Neil Coster is talking up the credentials of the new leader at the kennel.

"We were looking for someone different to lift the club and take the next step to the higher grades," he said.

"He certainly looks the goods.

"He's got them training hard."

Audesho thrived as a player and represented Australia at under-23 level.

He also spent time as a scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport.

"I played at an elite level for a number of years," he said.

But it is Audesho's coaching expertise which the Bulldogs were more interested in.

The 44-year-old has a proven track record in Western Australia for earning promotion for his former teams Melville and Kalamunda.

He also coached state league 1 club Greensborough with positive results.

But, perhaps his top gig was coaching the Bangladeshi national team.

Audesho has used his badges, experience and know-how to prepare the Bulldogs for a tilt at promotion.

"Our goal is to get to state league 1 - preferably this year," he said.

"We've undergone an intense training program and now we're starting to get into the skills component.

"The toughest part was changing the culture of a state league 2 team to get them to have the mentality of a state league 1 team.

"A lot of clubs struggle to make that transition, but the club seems to be rejuvenated in reference to dedication to training."

It is also an exciting time for the Bulldogs women's section.

Last year's state league 3 champions will move up a grade under coach Glenn Lloyd for a shot at the second tier competition. Formed in 1934, the Bulldogs have a massive 39 teams and more than 500 members.

They will be home to 19 junior, eight ladies, six mens and six veterans team this winter.

The past two years the club has placed an emphasis on building its junior base with junior administrator Brendan Sheehan playing a key role.

"We've slowly built up," Coster said.

"We did a postcard drop around all the local schools and had over 200 kids come and try for the second time. We've picked up about 25 per cent of those."

One junior who could be going places is striker Scott Shaw.

The youngster has been selected as an emergency for the Victorian under-18 team going to the national championships.

"He's a pretty good kid," Coster said.

"He trains hard and when he makes a commitment to someone he sticks to it.

"He's got plenty of speed and skill."

The state league season begins on April 17.
